HALT! WHO GLOWS THERE? PHOSPHORESCENT MONSTERS

Good morning. How are you? I hope that the week has been treating you well so far. It’s been a bit crazy over here, what with the launch of SEND A MONSTER on Facebook, and the new upload option for the Open Source Monsters. It’s been great to watch all the cool new drawings pop up! I always dig seeing your creatures.

That said, I thought it was high time that I gave you a few new Monsters of my own for the Halloween season. Or how about 100 new monsters on a poster? That glows in the dark?

Halloween-Poster-demo

This here poster measures 24″ x 18″, is printed on 100 lbs. Topkote paper, and features a two-tone glow-in-the-dark effect. The teeth and eyes glow brighter than the coats and the background, and some of the eyes have a two tone effect from ring to ring.

I’ve been trying to take a good photo of this, but failed. The glow is pretty strong to eyes that have adjusted to the dark, but my camera still cried uncle. I’ve tried to simulate the effect for you in Photoshop, but it’s more of an approximation.

One thing I found is that the glow is much more visible at night. Which makes little sense, because I was charging the posters in bright daylight before taking them into my light tight closet. All I can guess is that it just takes my eyes too long to adjust in the daytime. But now it’s 1AM and a quick pass by any lamp gives the Monsters a really nice, eerie glow.

You know… maybe it’s just that the Monsters only feel like glowing when they know it’s actually dark outside.

Here are a few daylight close-ups:

If you’d like to pick up a signed copy of the new poster, you can order it on the Store 344 site for $20 each, and I’ll send it to you in a sturdy poster tube. If you order before October 19th, I promise to send you your copy in time for Halloween.

The same is true of the all new glow-in-the-dark Monster greeting card:

Now this baby GLOWS. It’s printed on a smooth uncoated stock that really soaked up the phosphorescent ink. Just a few moments in the sun or in front of a light bulb gives you a truly brilliant Area 51 glow once you’re in the dark. It’s very satisfying, let me tell you! If you’re looking to scare your friends through the mail, this is the way to go.

The card measures 5″ x 7″ and features Julius & Ethelred Componella from the SEND A MONSTER Facebook app, for no other reason than I love the way that drawing turned out. You can order the card in a set of five at the Store 344 site for $25. (Yes, that’s $5 a card, but shipping is included, and I defy you to find a phosphorescent Daily Monster card anywhere for less.)

And that’s that, I hope you’ll forgive me the sales pitch. I just thought you’d like to have some new Monster goodies for Halloween.

In other news, many of you know the marvelous Emily Wong from her many brilliant Open Source Monsters and from her own blog Ninja vs. Penguin. Well, Emily has been a good friend over the past two years, so I was happy when she and Wey (aka Penguin) came to visit me at the studio on Wednesday. I pilfered this photo from Wey’s Twitter feed:

Well, Emily brought me a fantastic gift: a knitted version of Daily Monster 80 (perhaps better known as the Monster on the cover of the Monster Book). Isn’t this amazing?

Plush-monster-2

She commissioned her friend Wenny to crochet this little guy. Isn’t he amazing? This just makes me think that there need to be more squishy, plushy, crochety Monsters. Well, one thing at a time…

For now, I hope you’re having a good October, and that you’ll enjoy the new Monsters. Also, I hope that I don’t have to remind you that 344 LOVES YOU

Guten Morgen, Stefan! We had so much fun hanging out with you!! Thanks again for the tour of your pad & the charming company over lunch.
Your lawn friends gave me a bit of needed inspiration for the next OSM, which I’ll get to once I’m back on the East coast.
I’m still drooling over your books. Danke, truly! ^_____^

Hi Stefan! I’m writing from very very far away… I’m from Uruguay, in South America. I’m so happy because I just finished reading your book! I bought it online and 2 months after… it was here! I actually have monsters in my room! so awesome…
the downside is that I paid twice the price of the book in the shipping 🙁
that’s the only reason I’m not buying your poster and halloween cards for every person I know. I love all the monsters, (and you have to restock the pins in your store!)
i’ll keep enjoying the monsters in my book and online, and maybe ask Santa to bring me some monster goodies… you know, he doesn’t pay shipping or taxes…

I just hope they’ll sell those things in the Philippines so I could get a hold of one. I’ve fallen in love with those little (or big) monsters! Please make MORE!!!!
