WEEKLY MONSTER 107

Good morning. How are you? I hope the week is treating you well so far. I had a long, long day today (what with getting the Daily Monster Messenger Bag ready for you, for one). I was ready to collapse in a heap around 11pm, but the Weekly Monster called and I wouldn’t let you down, would I? Now it’s 3.30 am and I’m still rendering the clip. But I’m kind of excited about the way the monster came out. It’s given me a second wind. This one’s a little different from the others in a way, but I quite like it. I hope you will, too.

If you can spare the time, do please post your ideas and stories about Number 107. Until then, you do know, don’t you, that 344 LOVES YOU

    Well! This IS very different.
Looks like a cute lil animal out in the woods (with jazzy shoes).
I think my vote is for a return to the round open eyes and scary teeth…..*S*
…but that’s just me. I love the demented ones best.

Hi Inanna. I love the demented ones, too. But a few people rightly challenged me to really approach each blot with open eyes, so that’s what this is. I was particularly inspired to do this one by James Powell’s bathing Open Source Monster from earlier in the week, which is such a great use of the blot. Don’t fear, though: This monster is a freak among freaks. The wild-eyed monsters will be back!

Watching the fur being drawn was frickin’ awesome because I’ve never seen something like that before. Like magic.
Do you always draw things upside down, or is that a regular challenge for you now?
I thought it would be a similar to a creature from Robin Hood but then the shoes made that incredibly wrong.
I hope you don’t always have to stay up until 3am. That’s unpleasant.

Hi Danielle. I actually stayed up until 6.30 to get this posted. 3am is pretty much standard these days, and not at all a problem. (I do sleep in.) To answer your question, I actually prefer drawing right side up, but it’s so much more fun to do it upside down for the films. It’s a challenge and it looks good on screen.

By the way, I’m glad you enjoyed the fur bit. I like how that came out, too!

Holey moley, he’s too cute! =) Thanks for sharing him with us.
I love all the lil’ details—the crosshatching & shoe taps are great!

    Hi Stefan,
What are the materials you use? I really need to get some good thick black pens for large black spaces but I can’t seem to find good ones anywhere 🙁
as for the monsters, truly fantastic. From one nocturnal artist to another, do keep up the good work!

Hi Tom. I use Faber-Castell PITT artist pens, Staedtler pigment liners, Tombo ABT pens, and Yasutomo Sumi ink. For the big black spaces I use simple Sharpies (fine point and wedge tip). Cheap and effective. THe only drawback is that they’re smelly and bleed onto the next sheet. Still… a small price to pay for a big field of juicy black. Thank you for visiting the monsters!

    It’s a MOLE!
Really, Stefan, you’re awesome. And I may just have to get one of those messenger bags, because my supposedly well-crafted Samsonite bag is tearing at the seams.
As far as the pens go, I may need to upgrade from my all-Sharpie line-up. No, no, I’m a loyal customer. Gotta love that smell.
ALSO- Have you tried 67 lb. cardstock from Staples? There is no chance of page bleeding, and the pages are a gigantic 11×18.
    That is all. You rock.

Hey, Stefan! This week’s monster is Great! It’s always fun to break out of the mold and try something new. That’s what draws me to your site… Keep it up!

While taking a nice long walk Mortimer decided to see how far he could get with his eyes closed. Little did he realize that he stepped off the edge of a cliff and…

I really saw a hedgehog… and then it was a mole. But.. She’s kinda of a hedgehoggy sort of mole. I’m sure there’s a story here, but it’s tickling the back of my brain, and won’t come out. The boots are just absolutely fab, by the way. I’m seeing big chunky Western ropers. A horse riding mole? How cool would that be?
I’ll be back with a story!

…Mortimer floated, head over heels, in a bizarrely calm state of bliss and maybe even joy, and that was when he realized that he ought to have neither read Alice in Wonderland nor eaten those special brownies before he launched himself off the cliff.

Anstatt weisser Stock…rote Nagelschuhe. (kapiert?)
